Who wants to debate the accelerating trend toward authoritarianism? Not many, it seems. An August 16 article in New Republic discussed Edward Snowden’s latest “bombshell” leak of yet more NSA spying on US citizens and said, “The terrifying thing is that we are not having that debate.”
President Obama pledged on August 9 to make surveillance programs “more transparent,” but then failed to disclose the revelations mentioned above. That’s the nature of authoritarian trends, which gradually habituate hopeful people to an increasingly dangerous new normal.
