Social mood is becoming dangerously negative in Russia. In August 2008 the RTSI was down 27%, and Russia invaded Georgia. On March 3, 2014 — with the RTSI down 48% from its 2008 high and 40% from its 2011 high — President Vladimir Putin instigates a still-unfolding plan to take the strategically important region of Crimea away from Ukraine, and make it part of Russia.
