Two biotechnology firms recently announced a joint venture to open “the world’s largest animal cloning center” next year in Tianjin, China. South Korea’s Sooam Biotech and China’s Boyalife say that by 2020, the facility will clone one million cows per year.
Yet cloning cattle is only the beginning. According to Sooam founder Hwang Woo-Suk, South Korea’s restrictive bioethics laws drove the decision to locate the new facility in China, “in case we enter the phase of applying the technology to human bodies.” (AFP)
