It was released on May 12 and within a week infected more than 300,000 computers in over 150 countries: The “WannaCry” cryptoworm locks a computer’s data and displays a ransom demand to be paid via Bitcoin. The scheme has netted around $86,000 so far. WannaCry is based on the EternalBlue exploit, reportedly developed by the U.S. National Security Agency. Hackers leaked EternalBlue onto the internet two months ago.
