Liberation comes to an iconic snack box: After 116 years, the zebra, elephant, lion, giraffe and gorilla on boxes of “Barnum’s Animals Crackers” are no longer in boxcar cages. The new illustration shows the exotic animals roaming together across a grassland. The Nabisco company was urged by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to discontinue “the egregious cruelty inherent in circuses that use animals and the public’s swelling opposition to the exploitation of animals used for entertainment.”
