Will America’s technology giants be broken up? That possibility now looms as a growing number of state and federal antitrust investigators target the huge companies.
New York Attorney General Lelitia James said 47 attorneys general from U.S. states and territories have now joined her state’s investigation of Facebook. James said investigators will use every tool at their disposal to determine if Facebook’s actions “stifled competition and put users at risk.” Facebook also is the target of a separate antitrust investigation by the Federal Trade Commission, which handed the company a $5 billion fine due to its privacy policies.
Meanwhile, Facebook, Amazon, Google and Apple are being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice, which is determining if the four companies have “stifled innovation.” The head of DOJ’s antitrust division said that a possible breakup of the companies is “perfectly on the table.”
