Social Mood Conference | Socionomics Foundation

January 18, 2021

An article in the Daily Mail says Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an investigation into the algorithms used by Google, Amazon and Facebook. The CMA is concerned that the algorithms influence people’s purchases, change their perceptions by choosing the news that they see and even manipulate their love lives through dating apps. The CMA said companies can use algorithms to change the way they rank products on websites. This allows them to give a higher rating to their own products and exclude competitors.

The CMA’s investigation comes weeks after it said Google’s control of Britain’s online advertising market would be investigated. Some have claimed that Google is using its web browser, Chrome, to abuse its dominance in searches and browsing. Social mood governs the timing of government crackdowns on companies.
