President Biden has proposed a bill that allows millions of immigrants already in the U.S. to obtain citizenship within eight years. The bill also speeds up the citizenship process for undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children, and it replaces the word “alien” in immigration laws with the friendlier word “noncitizen.”
Meanwhile, there are other bills in Congress that would revise smaller portions of the U.S. immigration system. These include the DREAM Act, sponsored in the Senate by Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Dick Durbin. The act establishes a citizenship path for children who came to the U.S. illegally.
