Wife School is in Session

What’s the secret to a happy marriage?

According to a new cottage industry of masterclass courses known as “Wife School,” the answer is a “smiling, attentive, and submissive wife” (The Guardian, April 28). The school’s founder and social media influencer likens marriage to riding a tandem bike:

The husband is at the front, managing the ride while his wife pedals helpfully behind him. “You’re exerting effort without being in control,” she said. When couples disagree…wives should practice “the skill of ‘zip it’”.

This is tradwife 101, the social media movement espousing traditional gender roles of the glorified, 1950s housewife. Notes The Guardian: “47% of gen Z women were interested in being trad wives.”

We first alerted readers to this growing movement in the December 2023 issue of The Socionomist. Our story “Poodle Skirts, Saddle Shoes and Dinner on the Table: Is 1950s Style Back?” drew a direct correlation between social mood and the “collective wave of nostalgia… re-churning the waters of the 1950s.”
