From banknote designs to war loan decisions, the EU is more divided than ever
The European Union is voting this April on new designs for its six banknotes. The jury is divided between two competing visions. Writes Irish Independent, April 6: “Euro Identity Crisis: Beethoven or Birds?”
One theme features six famous European figures (Beethoven, da Vinci, Curie, Callas, et al), while the other depicts six distinctly European birds (wallcreeper, kingfisher, avocet, gannet, et al) and rivers. Concludes the Irish Independent:
One thing is sure: the redesign aims to reflect Europe but also reveals how hard that still is.
