Do You Deserve a Break Today? Try a “Recession Combo”

CNBC, Aug. 23 reports on the return of “recession specials,” a trend of low-cost products from food to fashion that emerged during the 2008 financial meltdown. Today’s call back started as a “tongue-in-cheek” marketing ploy. But for some businesses, preparing for a downturn is no joke.

This summer, a popular Manhattan eatery offered the “Recession Combo” – burger, fries and beverage for $10 – for a limited time. It went viral, and is now a mainstay on the menu:

The idea for the burger’s name didn’t necessarily come from a desire to cash in on the buzzword, said Ed Onas, Super Duper’s vice president of operations. Instead, he said, the moniker was derived from the Depression-era origins of the Oklahoma-style smash burger, which aimed to stretch ground beef by adding lots of sliced onions.

From cheap burgers to cheap beer, many small businesses are preparing for a slowdown. If they’re right, are you ready?
